Tilly Foster Mine Disaster Memorial Now Under Construction

Construction of the Tilly Foster Mine Disaster Memorial is underway, honoring the lives lost in the 1906 tragedy. This memorial will serve as a significant reminder for Westchester residents of the mining disaster's impact.
Memorial Details
The Tilly Foster Mine Disaster Memorial is taking shape in Putnam County, as construction began to honor the 189 miners who lost their lives in a tragic incident on March 19, 1906. Located at the site of the former Tilly Foster Mine, the memorial will be a place for reflection and remembrance. The memorial will feature a monument and plaques detailing the history of the disaster, providing educational opportunities for visitors.
Measuring 1,200 square feet, the memorial area includes an estimated 70% of the original mine property. The project, initiated by Putnam County officials and supported by local historical societies, aims to ensure that this pivotal event in local history is not forgotten.
Community Support
In addition to honoring the victims, the memorial also serves as a gathering place for future commemorative events. County Executive MaryEllen Odell emphasized its significance: "This site will not only remember the miners but will also educate future generations about the risks faced in the mining industry." Fundraising efforts have gathered contributions from local businesses and residents, demonstrating strong community support.
Putnam County has collaborated with landscape architects to design the space thoughtfully. Plans include benches, pathways, and informational signs to enhance the visitor experience. The goal is to complete the memorial by the anniversary date of the disaster in 2026, ensuring that the memories of those who perished are preserved and honored.
