Irvington Eighth Graders Achieve Essay Contest Finalist Status

Two eighth graders from Irvington Middle School, Max Johnson and Emily Chen, have been recognized as finalists in the 2026 New York State Essay Contest organized by the New York State Literacy Association. This honor highlights their exceptional writing skills and dedication to exploring important topics through their essays.
About the Contest
The New York State Essay Contest aims to promote literacy and encourage students to express themselves creatively. Max’s essay centered around the theme of environmental sustainability, while Emily’s focused on the significance of community service. Their work will now be evaluated by a panel of judges who will select the top essays in each age category.
Recognition and Impact
Max and Emily will be honored during a ceremony on June 15 at the New York State Capital in Albany, where they will also receive certificates recognizing their achievement. This recognition not only celebrates their individual talents but also places Irvington Middle School in the spotlight for fostering academic excellence.

Both students expressed gratitude towards their language arts teacher, Ms. Karen Thompson, who encouraged their participation in the contest. “It was exciting to delve into such important topics and share my thoughts through writing,” Max stated.
